Youth Speaks

It has been a busy few weeks for our Youth Speaks team.

Youth Speaks is an annual national public speaking competition organised by Rotary International of Great Britain & Ireland (RIBI), and Callum, Oli and Ben are the first team to enter from Fowey. The boys discussed cyber-bullying and Callum says it’s a topic about which Oli in particular is passionate.

The team won the first round, held on 6th February here at Fowey Community College supported by representatives from Lostwithiel Rotary, and went through to the next round held in Helston on 13th February where they competed with Truro School. This time they lost, but have picked up plenty of pointers for next year.

The team’s mentor, Mrs Pedlar, our English faculty Teaching Assistant, said: “I am incredibly proud of Callum, Oli and Ben, due to their thorough preparation, independence and confidence on stage. The boys performed extremely well and, after rehearsing their speeches for several weeks, the hard work paid off. “
