Three Year 10 students, Izzy, Laura and Ellie were delighted to visit the design team at top Cornish clothing brand, Seasalt, on 22nd March.
The visit forms part of their Silver Arts Award and head print designer Sophie Chadwick showed the group how she creates repeat patterns for the garments the company produces at its Cornish base.
The trip involved a tour of the building, meeting Ellie in the graphics team on the way. Ellie designs the catalogues, tags and packaging for the products. She was developing an idea for tags and labelling inspired by the famous Cornish artist, Peter Lanyon. Ellie showed the girls how Lanyon’s use of colour and painting technique inspired her own seascape creation. She then scanned this into Photoshop and used sections of her painting, combined with lettering, to create her labels.
The group then met Sophie in the print design team. Sophie explained to us how she designs a print for a garment from hand-printed or hand-drawn designs through to the finished product.
Garment technologist Lucy liaises with the designers and the factories to ensure that the garment silhouettes are correct and that the products fit properly from size 10 to 20.
Next, the group had a sneak preview of the Autumn/Winter 2013 collection. They were shown exclusive designs and new accessories not yet available in the shops.
We would like to thank the Seasalt team for providing such an informative day for our Fowey students.
