Fowey gig win

Fowey River Gig Club’s Under 16 team won the Caradon meet at Saltash on 21st June.

It was a tough competition against a very strong Cornish field including U16 teams from Coverack, Caradon, Cothele Quay, Helford and Falmouth.

After a heat, the crews went into a gruelling 25-minute final.The Fowey crew trains twice a week between April and October and races every weekend. In the winter, this reduces to once a week with no races.

The key to a good performance is the start. Jade says: “We practised our starts before the event. Coverack had a big lead from the start, but we got it back before the first mark.”

The U14 and U16 crews are recruiting more members and would especially like to hear from boys who would like to join, as there are currently more girls.

The crews are mixed and the teams have fun at events. Jade adds that the best bit about rowing is the friendships she has made and the social side.
